The Power of Music

Using the power of live music, The Spitz Charitable Trust enhances the mental health and quality of life of isolated and disabled adults. Our work is extensively with care home residents and hospital inpatients suffering with complex, long-term disabilities. We provide them with a vital lifeline to the outside world.

We support residents’ wellbeing by reducing isolation, promoting creativity, and improving community connections. This gives them the opportunity to learn new skills, increasing their self-esteem, and helping low-mood and anxiety.

Our grant will go towards spreading live music through three different sites in North London in the new year. It will fund two  musical activities at Bridgeside Lodge Care Home, one visit to St Pancras Hospital, and one visit to Northwick Park Hospital. With the colder and darker weather these activities will be vital for avoiding a deterioration in mental health in these three communities.

We will be running programmes of:

  • Small group social musical activities
  • 1:1 sessions for bed-bound residents
  • Personalised song-writing workshops

“There is a clear and tangible link between the benefits of live music and clinical care. Music sessions put recipients in a good mood. This means they eat more, they drink more and so are better hydrated which reduces their risk of falls. They respond better and are more receptive to care. Boredom is decreased.”
